HARGREAVES MISSES CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
Even after returning from two years of injury Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has missed Champions League matches. Hargreaves, who joined Manchester United for 18 million pounds in the summer of 2007, has played just one season with the side before getting injured. He ruptured his Achilles tendon and made a brief comeback in the 2009-10 season. His first start in nearly two years ended in a disaster when he lasted just five minutes on the pitch before being substituted owing to a hamstring problem.
There is no timeline on Owen Hargreaves’ probable recovery and it is highly unlikely that he would be given a new contract by the end of the 2010-11 season. Sir Alex Ferguson has now omitted the 29-year-old midfielder out of the Champions League squad but he would still be eligible to play in the Premier League whenever he returns.
Hargreaves spent the entire two years working on the injury and underwent multiple operations and rehabilitation programmes. He was forced to sit out the pre-season campaign in the USA in the summer since he was consulting a renowned specialist to get help on his injuries. It is very unfortunate for a player of his talent for trying so hard to remain fit, yet failing in every attempt.
